A NEW LINE IS INTRODUCED!

Hurrah! I believe I have come up with the solution to the main challenges that a one -of a kind artist faces- getting their work into the hands of more collectors while staying fresh. I hope to bridge the gap between my painted faces and my dolls and animals.

Lotsa LaFFs! Now-

As many of you may know, I have a weakness for mask face ( particularly side-glancing ) dolls and animals.

It has also come to my attention that some collectors want animals that wear actual children's clothes and are the perfect size for hugging. So I used the body of an 18 month old for inspiration and Lotsa LaFFs! Were born. They are roughly 22 inches tall, made of mohair or other sturdy fabrics with mask faces. Attached are the first of the Lotsa LaFFs! Series. They are slightly less expensive than other Lampshire Originals and 4 times the size.

But that got me to thinking- Why stop there?

With Lotsa LaFFs! You will be able to pick a mask for both dolls and animals. Portraiture will be an option.

Next you will pick a body, all types will be offered, and even a cloth ball-jointed doll will be available.

Isn't it great when doll artists get together? I taught a workshop the evening of August 18th in Royal Oak at the Senior Center where the Michigan Doll Artisans meet on the third Monday of every month. We had so much fun poking at my roving creating wonderful bendy critters. For many of them, it was their first time felting ever. I just love that. Thanks for a great time! Well, the turnout for Expo in Washington DC may have been much smaller compared to years past ( so I am told), but for me, it absolutely rocked. I got picked up by Diane's Doll Shop and Carol's Doll Closet, sold 10 pieces in 20 minutes ( Thanks, Diane! ) and had a wonderful class of 4 that actually went superb, not to mention was not cancelled! The biggest highlight was a call from Richard Simmons asking for a piece. It is now finished and will be posted shortly.

In making my tutorial for Doll Crafter and Costuming ( October issue to be released in August), I discovered this sweet style that is a cross between my Flexible Figures and my Follies. The first was a prototype that became Robin Wren. I really love it, kinda a cross between Lenci and the Kiddles. The witches both have glass-eyed kitties. The White Witch comes with a full miniature bottle of White Witch perfume. They are jointed and wired and 8" tall. There are beans in their feet to weigh them down.

Professional Decisions

There comes a time in everyone's career when they have to change direction slightly and/or make executive decisions.
I have decided that I am in love with mohair fabric, and apparently so are my collectors. So I have decided to concentrate on mohair creations. They are called LaCreme, and are the finest I can make them.
I have also decided on my 2008 line, and a hefty work schedule to see them done.
I am going to try doing shows, to rule out whether I want to do them continuously or not.
I am also hiring an agent to do my marketing, booking gigs, scouting and such.
I cannot list my ebay items, market myself, etc. and get my work done. I do not want the quality of my work to suffer because I cannot concentrate. It is hard enough to concentrate with 3 kids!
I will make dolls, but have decided to explore Boudoir dolls with animal companions. Look for my large tutorial article(s) in the October and November issue of DOLLCRAFTER & COSTUMING entitled COMPANIONS. One article will feature the doll, the next will feature the animal.
So excited about it, but until then, I have more animals to make!

I will be teaching an Extreme Needlefelting Class at the Creative Spirits Art Center in Midland Michigan on June 16, 2007, and a bear class on July 28. The students will receive their bear patterns by mail and will bring bear bodies for us to felt. Like Blessing, seen here- The Creative Spirit Art Center is in Midland Michigan. The Fiberplay exhibit is a juried show that I will be participating in as well. The facilities are awesome, and it promises to be exciting. You can see their website here:

Just got back from the MDPAG ( Metro Detroit Polymer Art Guild) www.mdpag.org retreat at the Columbiere Center in Clarkston, Michigan. 48 members attended. Lindly Haunani, guest speaker is in the front, second from the left. Debbie Jackson, author, is seen in the middle. Yours truly is in the front, far right. I was only able to go on Saturday, but I had so much fun! I hung out with my best buds (seen here with Cindy Bolton and Suzanne Boissy) , took demos, painted a great pair of shoes and sculpted two heads. And man, did I eat! DEFINITELY going back next year! Felting Class March 3 at Spinning Loft

Well, my March 3rd class at the Spinning Loft in Howell , Michigan further proved that I want to be an art teacher when I grow up. What fun we had! Nearly all 9 students finished their pieces. Many of the students wanted to make sheep. I will be posting their creations in my Student Gallery this week. Hopefully, we will be getting another class together soon. I think I am addicted to making boudoir dolls. I sent out my $15 for the Treasure of the Gypsy Challenge today as well. I will also be participating in the Dimensions in Dollmaking Exhibit. The new theme is Historical Dolls. I guess I am expanding into cloth as well.
Will keep you posted on how my class turned out, as well as how the Gypsy of the Sea Doll, and other boudoirs are coming.

My husband Jim gave me the bedroom for a studio, so now I am teaching on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I am able to accomodate up to three students at a time, and for a larger group my friend Crystal lets me teach in her basement classroom. I provide all materials for my students, and we have a blast. Each leave with a piece at least half done and a CD that aids them in finishing the rest. My neighbor Jason was kind enough to give me an iMac, so now I even have two computers!
